The Constitutional Court of Italy has elected Marta Cartabria, a 56-year-old law professor, as president of the institution on Wednesday, a position that will be held for the first time by a woman.
“The glass ceiling has been broken,” said Cartabria, who said it is “an honor” to be the pioneer in this position of the Italian high court.
In a statement, the Court has assured that the new president has been chosen by her companions, since the 14 judges who could participate in this vote bet on her to lead the institution.
Cartabria is a Catholic and an expert in European Union legislation and will be in office until September 2020, when she ends her term as judge of the Constitutional Court. This is a woman close to the Italian president, Sergio Mattarella, and during the August government crisis his name was shuffled to be prime minister, a position that has never been occupied by a woman in Italy.
