WHO director general warns of future pandemics

GENEVA (DPA / EP) .- The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has warned in a video published this Sunday that the coronavirus pandemic will not be the last of this type of crisis.

“History tells us that this will not be the last pandemic. Epidemics are a fact of life,” he said in this footage published by the first International Day of Preparedness for Epidemics.

The WHO leader has said that better investment in public health by governments and society could ensure that future generations inherit a safer, more resilient and sustainable world.

In this line, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, also spoke on Twitter, calling for “learning” from the experience of the coronavirus and investing in health systems to “improve” the response to “future emergencies.”

For his part, Tedros has pointed out that the coronavirus “has turned the world upside down” in the last twelve months and that it will have far-reaching consequences on societies and economies.

But the pandemic itself is not a surprise, since it had been warned as a possibility, but the world did not prepare for it.

“We must learn all the lessons that the pandemic is teaching us,” he stressed and asked not only to invest in health but rather “with an approach that encompasses the entire Government and society.”

For Tedros, the pandemic has highlighted the “intimate link between the health of humans, animals and the planet.”
