Sacramento Kings general manager Monte McNair announced on Saturday –early in Spain– the dismissal of Mike Brown as head coach of the Californian NBA team and also the appointment of Doug Christie as his interim replacement.
“It was a difficult decision and I want to thank Mike for his many contributions to the organization,” McNair told NBA media. Christie was in his third season as assistant coach for the Kings, who are twelfth in the Western Conference, with a record of 13-18, and have accumulated five consecutive losses.
Selected 17th overall by the Seattle Supersonics in the 1992 NBA Draft, Christie played 15 seasons in the NBA, averaging 11.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game in 827 career appearances (708 starts) for seven different teams.
He helped the Kings reach the postseason in each of those seasons from 2000 to 2005. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team in 2002/03 and the All-Defensive Second Team in 2000/01, 2001/02 and 2003/04. Prior to joining the Kings as an assistant coach, Christie spent four seasons as a full-time analyst for the team from 2017 to 2021.
As for Mike Brown, he was named head coach of the Kings in May 2022 after spending six seasons as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors. During his time with the Sacramento team, he achieved a record of 107 wins and 88 losses.
