Tegucigalpa, .- The deportation of Hondurans, mainly from Mexico and the United States, increased by 31.1% between January and April 2019, in relation to the same period of 2018, an official source reported Tuesday.
Between January and April of this year, 30,925 Hondurans were deported, compared to 23,591 in the same period of 2018, according to a report from the Consular and Migratory Observatory of Honduras.
Of the total of immigrants, according to the document, 17,660 came from Mexico, 13,124 from the United States, and 141 from Central America, South America and Asia.
The report details that, of the total of Hondurans deported in the reference period, 24,728 adults and 6,197 minors.
Last year a total of 75,279 Hondurans were deported, mostly from Mexico and the United States, which is 56.7% more than the 48,022 repatriated in 2017, according to the figures of the Consular Observatory.
The authorities of Tegucigalpa estimate that in the United States there are around one million Hondurans, including legal and undocumented residents, who have escaped from situations that affect the Central American country such as violence.
Those who live abroad, mainly in the United States, send family remittances, which exceed more than $ 3,600 a year, according to official figures.
In recent years, irregular migration to the United States from the Northern Triangle of Central America -which includes El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras- has increased.
In October of 2018 and this year, caravans with thousands of Central Americans, most of them Hondurans, with the desire to reach the United States, have caused the US government to reinforce its border and announce cuts in cooperation with the Northern Triangle. not prevent the departure of migrants.
The Northern Triangle of Central America and Mexico promote the Integral Development Plan, which was signed on December 1, 2018 – the day on which Andrés Manuel López Obrador assumed the Mexican Presidency.
