US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, arrived in Malaysia on his first visit to the region today with an agenda highlighting the ministerial meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on May 3 and 4 in Singapore.
According to his official schedule, Pompeo will first make a brief visit to Kuala Lumpur that includes an interview with Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Friday morning.
On the same day he will travel to Singapore, where he will begin bilateral and multilateral meetings organized in the framework of the ASEAN meeting.
ASEAN consists of Burma (Myanmar), Brunei, Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and the historic meeting held by US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore last June will take part of the dialogue at the Saturday meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), a group focused on security issues.
North Korea is one of the countries that participate in the ARF, as well as South Korea, China, Japan, Russia and the European Union (EU), among others.
The Pompeo tour is completed with a meeting with the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, in Jakarta.
