Daughter of Miami mayor launches Ros-Lehtinen congressional seat nomination

Raquel Regalado, daughter of the mayor of Miami, Tomás Regalado, formally announced today her candidacy to compete for the congressional seat of Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who does not aspire to a new re-election.

“I’m running for Congress because it’s very difficult to live in South Florida today, because before we do anything else we need better paid jobs,” said Regalado, 42, in a video he posted on his Facebook account.

Regalado, who for seven years was a member of the Miami-Dade County School Board, said in his announcement that “we can not afford to buy a home, live or raise our children here,” in South Florida.

A single mother of two teenagers, aged 13 and 14, both with autism spectrum disorders, Regalado said she aspires to the seat of Florida’s 27th district that will free Ros-Lehtinen because a representative is needed to depart from “partisan rhetoric” And defend “our interests”.

“I have been and will continue to be that voice” that represents our interests in Congress and that makes things happen, said Regalado, who failed in 2016 in his bid to win the elections to Miami- Dade.

Ros-Lehtinen announced last April that, at the end of his term in this legislative term, which will end in 2018, he will withdraw from Congress and will not aspire to a new re-election.

After 38 years in Congress, where she became the first representative of Cuban origin in the lower house, the Republican will withdraw from parliamentary life.
