Venezuela condemns the recognition by the US of Juan Guaidó as interim president of the country

The Government of Venezuela on Wednesday condemned the decision of the United States to once again recognize the opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president of the country and has described the measure as a “violation of International Law, the Constitution and the democratic order.”

In a statement, the Caribbean country’s Foreign Ministry has accused the US State Department of “attempting to legitimize the operation of a transnational criminal group already infamous for its role in the theft and squandering of the resources of Venezuelans.”

“This new effort is part of a failed and recidivist policy of the United States, which criminally affects the sovereignty of the country and seeks to put its peace, stability and development at risk,” the text states.

Thus, the Venezuelan Government has labeled as “regrettable” the “lack of courage” on the part of Washington to “try to maintain a diplomatic relationship, dialogue and respect with the Government of Venezuela” and has criticized that the president, Joe Biden, continues ” his financial, diplomatic, economic and political persecution against Venezuela. “

“It is time for the United States government to abandon its threats and rectify its position, as has already been done by several international actors who at some point gave in to pressure and deception from the United States,” he asserted before qualifying that the position is “irrational, cowardly and neo-colonial”.

The White House has considered since 2019 that the government of Nicolás Maduro is a dictatorship and since then has recognized Guaidó as the country’s “president in charge.” On Tuesday, the authorities of the North American country have conveyed their “support to the Venezuelan people in their desire for a peaceful restoration of democracy through free and fair elections” and have rejected the “political repression of the Maduro regime and” the unbridled abuses of Human Rights “.

Maduro announced this weekend in an interview with the Telesur channel that he wants to establish a “direct, courageous and sincere” dialogue with the United States.

“Hopefully, who knows when and with whom, the possibilities of a direct, courageous, sincere and understanding dialogue with the United States Government will open up. I wish it were with the Government of Joe Biden,” he said.
