Sheinbaum Accuses US of Seeking to Influence 2027 Elections: “Mexico Is No One’s Piñata”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has accused the United States government of meddling in the country’s internal affairs in an attempt to influence the upcoming 2027 elections. These accusations follow allegations leveled against Mexican officials and the revelation that US agents were present during operations in Chihuahua.

“When outsiders dictate who is guilty and who is not—when there is an attempt to pressure our institutions from abroad, and when the idea is normalized that another country can intervene in matters that concern only Mexicans—we are no longer talking about cooperation; we are talking about interference,” she stated.

Sheinbaum made these remarks this Sunday during a massive rally celebrating the second anniversary of her electoral victory, which drew thousands of people to the Monument to the Revolution in Mexico City. “We have been the target of a media offensive and social media campaigns,” she warned.

“Mexico is no one’s piñata,” Sheinbaum asserted. At another point in her speech, she questioned the interest the United States has shown in the extradition of a dozen Mexican officials accused of drug trafficking offenses—including the Governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, who has been removed from office pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.

“Who decides in Mexico: foreign agencies or the people?” the President asked, urging all citizens to defend national sovereignty and the government’s policies against new forms of destabilization, such as disinformation and media campaigns.

“This is not about denying freedom of expression—that freedom is an indispensable pillar of any democracy—but rather recognizing that, behind paid accounts and bots, foreign and domestic interests are being orchestrated in an attempt to reclaim lost privileges or halt the transformation,” she explained. As the Mexican president noted, this campaign has intensified following the revelation—at the end of April—of the presence of U.S. agents involved in a state-level operation in Chihuahua; that incident resulted in the deaths of two of these individuals in a traffic accident, and an investigation into the matter has already been opened.

“No foreign agent may carry out duties that fall exclusively to Mexican authorities,” Sheinbaum reminded, continuing to express her indignation by pointing out that “just a few days later,” Washington demanded the arrest of a dozen Mexican officials “without publicly presenting any evidence.”

“An event of this magnitude is unprecedented in the history of our bilateral relationship,” stated the Mexican leader, reiterating that her country remains open to collaborating with the United States on security matters and the fight against drug trafficking, provided that its national sovereignty is not called into question.

“To help us reduce violence in Mexico, it is indispensable to halt arms trafficking, and it is fundamental that they address the grave problem of drug consumption within their own territory. Just as we take action within our borders, they, too, must dismantle the drug distribution networks and money laundering operations occurring within the United States,” the Mexican president emphasized.

While such warnings have been a recurring theme in recent years—ever since the Morena party assumed power in Mexico—these last two episodes in relations with the United States have fueled the debate regarding the maneuvers that the northern neighbor might be conducting behind the scenes to influence the 2027 elections, in which the ruling party is currently the frontrunner.

Last week, Congress—with the votes of the government and its coalition partners—passed a constitutional amendment allowing for the annulment of both federal and state elections that have been compromised in any way by foreign agents, provided that such interference can be substantiated by irrefutable evidence.
