Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed Thursday to create a security organization for the Persian Gulf region that has Russia, China, the United States and the European Union as observers, amid current tensions.
“We propose to put aside accumulated prejudices, mutual claims and try to create a new organization for security and cooperation in this region,” Putin said in the Valdei debate club.
Putin has said that “in addition to the Gulf countries, Russia, China, the United States, the European Union, India and other interested states could enter as observers,” Sputnik news agency reports.
The tension has skyrocketed in the Gulf following the first anniversary of the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear agreement signed in 2015 with Iran, which it fulfilled in May. In these months, there have been “sabotages” and arrests of ships in the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on Saudi refineries.
