The Global Sumud Land Caravan, which aims to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, reported this Monday that it is being attacked by unidentified individuals who are seizing some of the activists and forcing others to leave. Approximately 200 people are participating in the caravan, four of whom are Spanish nationals.
“The overland convoy is being attacked right now. Unidentified vehicles are ramming into the tents, and people are being beaten and forcibly taken away in cars and buses,” the group stated in a press release.
Other activists “are being violently attacked and forced to leave the site,” added the organization, noting that they do not know the identity of the attackers, although “we are receiving reports that they are security forces linked to the authorities in western Libya.”
On Sunday, the Global Sumud Land Caravan reported that it was negotiating with authorities in eastern Libya regarding the caravan’s passage through a checkpoint located near the city of Sirte.
The convoy comprises ten trucks carrying humanitarian aid, seven ambulances, and over 200 participants, including experts in medicine, engineering, logistics, and humanitarian law. The initiative set out from Mauritania approximately one month ago.
