Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with King Felipe VI at the Zarzuela Palace on Tuesday, followed by a luncheon in his honor. Later that afternoon, he will meet with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at the Moncloa Palace, where both will subsequently address the media.
In a statement, Moncloa Palace detailed the third visit the international leader will make to Spain. The government stated that the meeting in Madrid “will be an opportunity to reaffirm Spain’s commitment to Ukraine in all areas.” Zelensky is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, according to the Élysée Palace.
As part of the visit, the Ukrainian president will be received by Pedro Sánchez at the Moncloa Palace at 5:00 p.m. “to discuss issues of common interest.” The King will also meet with Zelensky at the Zarzuela Palace at 1:30 p.m., followed by lunch.
Zelensky had planned a trip to Spain in April of this year, which he had to cancel to attend Pope Francis’s funeral in Vatican City.
During his first visit to Spain, Zelensky and Sánchez signed a bilateral security and defense agreement at the Moncloa Palace, which extended to areas such as humanitarian assistance, the country’s reconstruction, and “the pursuit of a just and lasting peace based on international law.” The King and Queen of Spain also hosted a luncheon in their honor at the Royal Palace.
After the start of the war, the Ukrainian president also addressed an extraordinary session of Congress via videoconference in April 2022, but it wasn’t until May 2024 that he visited the Congress building in person, on the Carrera de San Jerónimo, during a state visit.
