A 73-year-old Spanish citizen has been arrested at the Punta Cana International Airport, in the Dominican Republic, for possession of eight packages that were presumably cocaine, according to Dominican authorities.
Agents from the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) and members of the Specialized Airport Security Corps have seized the shipment in an operation coordinated by the Public Ministry, according to the Dominican newspaper ‘Listín Diario’.
Based on intelligence information, the agents intervened with canine units and detected the alleged narcotic substances inside a suitcase, which is why they initiated the action protocol for these cases.
The luggage was opened in the presence of a prosecutor and a package with four boxes containing eight packages of the substance was found inside.
The detainee, who was going to take a flight to Paris, will be brought to justice in the next few hours for violation of Law 50-88 that punishes crimes and offenses related to illicit drug trafficking. The eight packages have been sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif).
