Biden appoints Joe Kennedy III as US special envoy for Northern Ireland

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has appointed Joe Kennedy III as the new special envoy for Northern Ireland for economic affairs, in order to promote development and opportunities in the region.

Kennedy will deal with strengthening the interpersonal ties of the United States in Northern Ireland “for the benefit of all communities,” according to a statement from the US State Department.

“His role builds on the United States’ long-standing commitment to support peace, prosperity and stability in Northern Ireland and the peace dividends of the Belfast Agreement (also known as the Good Friday Agreement),” continues the missive.

According to the US government, Joe Kennedy has dedicated his career to public service, including eight years in the US House of Representatives, serving as Assistant District Attorney for Massachusetts and serving as a Peace Corps volunteer.

This experience would have served him to “support economic growth in Northern Ireland and deepen America’s commitment to all communities.”

“In parallel, US diplomats in Europe and Washington will continue to collaborate with political leaders in efforts to restore the Northern Ireland Executive and resolve differences over the Northern Ireland Protocol,” the State Department said.
