Together with the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development (MEPyD), the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) led the presentation of the results of the first World Bank mission on the Resilient Agriculture and Integrated Management of Water Resources Project (PARGIRH), in which was also attended by representatives of the Ministries of Environment and Natural Resources and Agriculture, the Water Cabinet, as well as the National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewage (INAPA).
The report was presented to the project’s Steering Committee, which includes the aforementioned institutions and is chaired by the Minister of the MEPyD, Miguel Ceara Hatton.
During the meeting, the executive director of INDRHI, Olmedo Caba Romano, said that PARGIRH will generate great results for agriculture and comprehensive water management, and expressed satisfaction with the participation and trust placed in the entity he directs for the coordination of the team.
“I want to thank you for the trust you have had in us to make this a reality and for INDRHI to coordinate this project together with you. Similarly, we interpret the philosophy and thought of our president Luis Abinader committed to the proper distribution of water for agricultural development.
On her side, when analyzing the different proposals and addressing the components of the project, the representative of the World Bank in the country, Alexandria Valerio, also highlighted the confidence of the Dominican government through the different organizations to seek the common good in the country with this project.
Entities related to the water and agriculture sector worked during the week, among other things, on an analysis of the project’s components, including improving the resilience and management of hydraulic infrastructure, developing capacities for the management and governance of natural resources and project management; pollution reduction through the improvement of water supply and sanitation services in prioritized areas, as well as sustainable management of agroecosystems.
In addition, the institutions socialized regarding the support for the consolidation of the national soil and water conservation system, as well as protected areas through the prevention of degradation and the development of illicit activities in said areas.
PARGIRH is a project that will be developed by the hydraulic agency together with the aforementioned institutions in the Yaque del Norte and Ozama – Isabela hydrographic basins, financed by the World Bank with an amount of US$80 million, and will directly impact the provinces of Dajabón, Montecristi, La Vega , Santiago Rodríguez, Valverde, Monte Plata, Puerto Plata and also Greater Santo Domingo.
The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Soils and Waters of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, Fulvio Ureña; the Deputy Minister of Extension and Agricultural Training of the Ministry of Agriculture, Darío Vargas; the deputy director of the National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewage (INAPA), Wascar Martínez; the executive director of the Water Cabinet, Gilberto Reynoso; the representative of the World Bank mission, Barbara Farinelli, and the coordinator of PARGIRH, Víctor De Óleo, among others.
