The medals won at the Barcelona’92 Games are worth five times more today

The fluctuation in the price of metals has meant that the physical value of the Olympic medals that Spanish athletes won in the Barcelona’92 Olympic Games has increased by more than 405 percent on average, and from 1,418 euros that year has passed to 7,921 today.

A study by the sports betting guide Kelbet has calculated how much the value of the medals has increased from the Moscow’80 Games to the current ones in Tokyo 2020, which are played until this Sunday, August 8.

Thus, the value of a gold medal obtained in Tokyo 2020 is around 724.55 euros. The figure is low if we take into account that the medal weighs 556 grams, although only 6 of those 556 grams are actually gold. If the entire medal were completely gold, its value would be around 31,000 euros.

According to this study, the gold medals that have appreciated the most over time are those of Sydney 2000, which cost about 75.47 euros each and could currently be sold for 458.46 euros without the added value of their sporting significance .

The Sydney 2000 bronzes are also the third-place Olympic medals that have increased the most in value, more than 361.99 percent. The silver medals whose physical value has increased the most are those of Barcelona’92, which according to the prices of materials cost about 31.60 euros each in 1992. Today, these distinctions have reached a value of 201.75 euros, a 538.51 percent more.

THE VALUE OF THE SPANISH MEDALS HAS DOUBLED
On average, the value of the medals obtained by Spanish athletes has increased by 106.08 percent from -1.54 percent in London 2012 due to the 2008 crisis that almost tripled the price of gold to 482, 8 of Sydney 2000, prior to that ‘crash’ as the price of materials is in a stable situation.

Each medal has a different material composition and weight. Therefore, when calculating the individual present value of each medal and comparing it with the rest, the figures do not coincide. For example, a bronze medal from Moscow 1980 weighs 116 grams, while the same decoration at Tokyo 2020 weighs 450 grams.
