Antonio Banderas signs for Indiana Jones 5 and joins Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford heads the cast of Indiana Jones 5, a new installment in the popular series to be directed by James Mangold. But although its filming started several weeks ago, the film continues to strengthen its cast with new high-level signings, the latest being the incorporation of the Spanish Antonio Banderas.

As reported by Deadline, it is unknown what character the Malaga actor will play. Banderas thus joins a cast that also includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook and Shaunette Renée Wilson. Production is currently underway and the premiere is scheduled for July 29, 2022. Details of the plot are unknown at the moment.

Mangold takes in this film the witness of Steven Spielberg, who directed the first four installments of the franchise. However, Spielberg will participate in the project as a producer. Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel join the filmmaker as producers. John Williams, who has worked on the music for previous films, will also return as a composer. Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth and Mangold are behind the script.

Banderas was nominated for an Oscar in 2020 for his work in Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory. He has recently appeared in titles like The Laundromat. Dirty money, The adventures of Doctor Dolittle or The other bodyguard 2. He will soon be in Uncharted, Official competition, The Enforcer and The Monster of Florence. Additionally, he will once again voice Puss in Boots in the animated film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

The production of Indiana Jones has suffered several delays. In addition to the coronavirus pandemic, Ford recently suffered an injury while filming. “During rehearsals for a fight scene, Harrison Ford sustained a shoulder injury. Production will continue while appropriate treatment is evaluated,” Disney said in a statement.

The franchise’s four previous installments – ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’, ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ – turned the archaeologist a popular icon and grossed nearly $ 2 billion at the box office.
