The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, has announced the construction of a fence on the border with Haiti with all the “physical and technological means” necessary to control illegal traffic.

“In the second half of this year, 2021, we will begin to build on the dividing line between the two countries: the Dominican Republic and Haiti,” said Abinader in his message of accountability to the Dominican Congress, collected by the Dominican ‘Diario Libre’.

The new security reinforcement measures, which will combine physical and technological means, and will include a double perimeter fence in the most conflictive sections and a simple one in the rest, as well as motion sensors, facial recognition cameras, radars and security systems. infrared rays “, he pointed out.

“With all this and within a period of two years, we want to put an end to the serious problems of illegal immigration, drug trafficking and traffic of stolen vehicles that we have suffered for years and achieve the protection of our territorial integrity that we have been seeking since our independence”, has added Abinader.

The announcement comes in the midst of a serious political crisis in Haiti and coinciding with the anniversary of the Dominican Republic’s independence from its neighbor on the island of Hispaniola.
