The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, will meet this Wednesday with the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, in a visit to the headquarters of the organization in Brussels, a week after Joe Biden assumes the Presidency of the country .
This has been announced by both the US Administration and the Atlantic Alliance. Washington has indicated that the trip will serve to reaffirm support for NATO and Pompeo will take the opportunity to highlight the importance of safeguarding the transatlantic link.
The Secretary of State’s office has announced an appointment with Belgian Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmès, with whom he hopes to redound to the partnership with Belgium and “reiterate the strength of bilateral relations.”
At the moment there is no evidence that Pompeo will extend the trip to meet with European leaders, a few days after the change of Administration in the United States takes place. The day of unrest last week when Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol has further clouded the EU’s relationship with the president in the latter stages of his time in the White House.
