The Official Section of Feature Films to Contest brings this Sunday the movie ‘The Projectionist’ (Dominican Republic), directed by José María Cabral, a film that has been selected by the Hollywood Academy to compete for the Oscar for Best International Film in the Next edition of these awards.
The film tells the story of Elisha, a lonely man obsessed with the images of a woman he sees every day through his 16-millimeter projector. After an accident that destroys the celluloid roll, his only connection with it decides to embark on a deep journey through the most remote and depressed places in the Dominican Republic to find it.
In a story full of references to Greek mythologies, as well as painting, cinema classics and the Caribbean sun, Eliseo makes his trip projecting films from town to town, an adventure from which he will meet Rubí, with which will discover and remember a past that, inevitably, is very present in his life, as explained in a statement from the Festival.
Written by Cabral himself and produced by Juan Basanta, the film stars Félix Germán, within a cast that also includes actresses Cindy Galán and Lia Briones. All of them give life to the characters in this drama in which his photography stands out, a work developed by Hernán Herrera.
José María Cabral is a Dominican writer, director and producer who started making films at age 16. His first movie, ‘Checkmate!’ (2012), was selected to represent his country at the Oscars in 2013; and another of its titles, ‘Carpenters’ (2017), was the first Dominican film selected to participate in the Sundance Festival, in 2017, harvesting numerous awards and nominations in as many international competitions.
