Former Head of Office denies that Peña Nieto received bribes from Chapo

Francisco Guzmán, who was the head of the Enrique Peña Nieto Office (2012-2018), denied that the former Mexican president received 100 million dollars in bribes from Joaquín “el Chapo” Guzmán as accused by the former secretary of the drug trafficker.

“The statements of the Colombian drug trafficker in New York are false, defamatory and absurd, and the government of Enrique Peña Nieto was the one who located, detained and extradited Joaquín Guzmán Loera,” the former official posted on Twitter.

During the trial against Chapo in New York, the Colombian Alex Cifuentes, who worked for the Mexican drug lord between 2007 and 2013, assured that Peña Nieto would have received $ 100 million through an intermediary in October 2012, two months before who will swear his position as president.

He also explained that Peña Nieto was the one who contacted the capo in 2012, after his election, and that he would have asked for $ 250,000 in exchange for suspending his search, to which Chapo answered with a counteroffer of 100 million dollars.

During the beginning of the trial against Guzmán Loera on November 14, the defense of the capo has already accused Peña Nieto and the former Mexican president, Felipe Calderón (2006-2012), of receiving bribes from drug trafficker Ismael “Mayo” Zambada García, partner of the Chapo. An end that both denied.

After that statement the defense lawyer was reprimanded by the judge of the case, Brian Cogan, who reproached him for having launched accusations without evidence.

El Chapo, extradited in January 2016 to the United States and in maximum security since then, has pleaded not guilty to 11 counts of drug trafficking, including maintaining a continuous criminal enterprise, carrying arms and money laundering, for which he could be sentenced. to life imprisonment.
