Walmart will consider entering the business of “streaming”

The retail chain Walmart plans to enter the business of “streaming” (online broadcast) through a new service with which it would try to stand up to other companies in the sector such as Netflix or Amazon.

The technology portal The Information said today that Walmart believes it can offer a digital platform for audiovisual content at a lower price than Netflix and Amazon Prime Video subscriptions.

Netflix subscription costs between $ 7.99 (basic user) and $ 13.99 (premium user) per month, while Amazon Prime Video’s cheapest offer is priced at $ 8.99 per month.

Walmart plans to create a “streaming” platform that costs less than $ 8 a month, although the company does not rule out developing a free service that is economically sustained with ads.

According to sources consulted by The Information, Walmart believes that, compared to the popularity of Netflix or Amazon on the east and west coasts, in the interior of the country, which is generally an area with fewer economic resources, there would be room for an offer of ” streaming “cheaper than existing ones.

Currently, Walmart includes in its catalog VUDU, an online video store service that allows you to rent audiovisual content without paying a subscription and paying only for the series and movies that the user wants to see.

In addition to Walmart, giants of entertainment and technology such as Disney, Apple or Facebook have recently expressed their interest in entering the world of streaming or strengthening their current offer in this sector.
