An exhibition in Miami shows the Oaxaca that Diego Rivera saw in the 20s

A show that opens its doors tomorrow at the Cultural Institute of Mexico in Miami shows 42 sketches made in the 20s by Diego Rivera to capture the hustle and bustle of the markets and streets of Oaxaca.

“Diego, Frida and his passions in Oaxaca” is the title of this exhibition that will remain open until June 7.

The exposed works, all of small format, come from a private collection and in the United States they had been exhibited earlier in this century in museums in Colorado and California.

Rivera, one of the most important painters and muralists of the 20th century in Latin America, made these sketches during one of his trips to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in the southern state of Oaxaca, on his return from a long training stay in Europe.

Oaxaca represents the synthesis of what Diego Rivera and his wife and plastic artist Frida Kahlo admired about Mexican culture, said a statement from the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami, which has organized this exhibition together with the Inter-American Chapter of the Chamber of Commerce. The works on display mostly show men, women and children in scenes that show the commercial activity in the markets and streets of Oaxaca.

The Cultural Institute of Mexico in Miami has organized guided tours to publicize some little known works of this artist of international stature.
