Haley was accompanied by representatives Mario Diaz-Balart, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Carlos Curbelo and Senator Marco Rubio, all of Cuban origin and Republicans, in the debate forum held at Florida International University (FIU).

Attending were representatives of the Hispanic and especially Cuban Miami community and professors and students, as well as Cuban internal opponent Antonio Rodiles.

Cuba and Venezuela dominated much of the debate in this event organized by the Gordon Institute of FIU.

Regarding Cuba, the ambassador said that the US he should think about how he can help the people of the island more so that “he can show the strength of his voice”.

The congressmen praised Haley for his resolute position before the regimes of Cuba and Venezuela and also for focusing on US relations with his southern neighbors.

In the words of Díaz-Balart, the ambassador has exercised a “profound leadership” in “isolating pariah regimes and being on the side of the defenders of freedom.”

In a statement published after the meeting, the congressman thanked Haley for focusing on “our hemisphere” and the “challenges” posed by corruption, drug trafficking and human rights violations.

“By promoting democracy, civil society and human rights in our hemisphere, we promote stability and prosperity among our neighbors and strengthen friendship with our allies,” said Díaz-Balart.

Curbelo, meanwhile, stressed in the forum that the Trump Administration “understands who our allies are, who our friends are and who are our friends and how each of them should be treated.” efeusa
