Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Ednita Nazario will be the godmother of the third edition of the Fiestas de la Calle in Miami 2018, organizers announced today.
“We are proud and blessed to have Ednita Nazario as a godmother, an important Puerto Rican figure who is internationally renowned and very loved by the Puerto Rican people and the Latino public,” said Julián Gil, one of the organizers in a statement.
He noted that among other activities, Nazario will be responsible for raising the flag of Puerto Rico in Miami during the event that coincides at the same time with the traditional Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastian held in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.
“Ednita is a perfect example of the hard-working and successful Latina woman,” she added.
The original festival, which has been held since 1954 in the historic center of the capital of Puerto Rico, was conceived as a tribute to the Catholic martyr who gives name to the road, according to some versions, although others indicate that it was born as a fundraiser for a chapel.
“This typical festival has become a favorite among Puerto Ricans and all the tourists that visit the island during the month of January, the date on which they celebrate and with which the Christmas season ends in Puerto Rico, known as the longest of the world “, indicates the press release.
The event in Miami, far from the religious background, will have the participation of Puerto Rican artists who will sing live, typical food, comparsas de cabezudos, artisans, fairs for children and other surprises with a family character, as announced by the organizers.
The organizers indicated that the goal of the festivities is to reactivate tourism in Puerto Rico, promote the destination, defend the culture, educate, inspire and strengthen the Puerto Rican and Latino community in the United States.
The Street Parties in Miami, with free admission to the public, will be held at Bayfront Park near the American Airlines Arena on Saturday, January 20 and Sunday, January 21, 2018.
