Congressman says Trump will make a “serious” change to Cuba’s policy

Cuban-born Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart said today that President Donald Trump will make a “serious” change to US policies toward Cuba from his predecessor, Barack Obama.

“Let there be no doubt, we are talking about a serious change, a real change in US policy,” he said in an interview with Martí Noticias.

Trump intends to announce next Friday in Miami a series of changes in the policy towards Cuba that could harden the conditions for the commerce and the trips of Americans to the island, according to have informed several means, but that has not been confirmed by the House Blanca.

“Already this to help finance the monopolies of the regime, and that is going to end, and also will end the attitude that the regime in Havana is acceptable,” he added.

Among the expected changes are the ban on US companies to negotiate with entities linked to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba and the possibility of imposing more restrictions on US travel to the island.

“The regime already knows this and will feel it in a much more direct way soon,” said Diaz-Balart, who along with Senator Marco Rubio are looking for Trump to reverse Obama’s policies as promised in his campaign.

Congressmen of Cuban origin from Florida, including Diaz-Balart, Rubio and Ileana Ross-Lehtinen, have repudiated the Obama and Cuba accords as they have not benefited the Cuban people but the island’s government and big business.

In July 2015 President Obama reestablished diplomatic relations with Cuba after fifty years of rupture, after a process of rapprochement announced in December 2014 by both governments.

Nevertheless, the US economic embargo persists to Cuba, which can only be raised by the US Congress or if Cuba meets the demands of democracy and respect for human rights, among other conditions required by the Cuban Adjustment Act.
