The White House expects “drastic changes” for Cuba to become a “free” democracy

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Cuba must implement “drastic changes” to become “soon” a “truly free and prosperous” democracy, given the severe restrictions imposed on the island.

“We want to see flourishing and prosperous democracies around the world, especially in our own hemisphere. I’m not talking about any specific actions by the United States to get there, but of course it is in the United States’ best interest for Cuba to be a truly free and prosperous democracy,” she said.

In this regard, she stated during a press conference in Washington that Havana is “a regime that is falling apart.” “Your country is collapsing, and that’s why we believe it is in your best interest to make very drastic changes soon,” she argued.

Her remarks come after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that talks are underway to initiate a dialogue between the two sides amid the fuel shortage crisis, exacerbated by new restrictions imposed by the United States.

“There are discussions to see if it’s feasible, but it depends on both governments, not just the will of the Mexican government,” the president stated at a press conference, reiterating that Mexico will continue sending aid to the island.

The United Nations has warned about the impact of the oil embargo on essential services in Cuba, such as access to food, water, and healthcare, indicating that these measures are worsening the human rights situation in the country.
