Mariners and Astros do not give way in the West; full set of Berrios

The duel between the Seattle Mariners and the Houston Astros for the lead of the American League West Division lasted one more day, while the Boston Red Sox suffered a surprise loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Starter Mike Leake pitched into the ninth inning, while Mitch Haniger homered and produced three runs for the Mariners, leaders of the West, who won 4-5 at the Tampa Bay Rays.

Leake (6-3) was relieved with a 5-1 advantage, after allowing his eighth unstoppable, a double by Venezuelan catcher Wilson Ramos who opened the ninth.

The Puerto Rican delivered 10 strikeouts, without giving tickets, to pocket his fourth victory in five starts. He added 44 strikeouts and four walks on 37 innings and two thirds during that period, and he has completed five consecutive starts of six innings or more, the best mark as a professional.

Venezuelan Eduardo Escobar hit a two-run homer after Puerto Rican double Eddie Rosario in the first inning against Shields (1-7), who has not won in 12 starts since the opening day of the season.
