The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, applauded the peace agreement between the transitional Government of Sudan and the main rebel groups, but recalled that this “enormously positive” milestone must be accompanied by “justice , truth and compensation “for the victims of barbarism and their families.
“I urge all parties to guarantee that Human Rights continue to be an axis of the peace agreement and its implementation,” said Bachelet, a day after the signing of the pact between the Sudanese government and the Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF ), with which the parties seek to end more than 17 years of conflict in the African country.
The signed text proposes the establishment of a special court to examine the crimes committed in Darfur, the establishment of transitional justice and the implementation of reconciliation mechanisms, all of them positive commitments in Bachelet’s opinion.
“All those responsible for human rights violations committed during the conflicts in Sudan must be held accountable, in accordance with due process and without undue delay,” the former Chilean president has warned, in a statement in which she has also asked Sudan to adhere to international treaties that you have not yet ratified.
The High Commissioner has also warned of other pending challenges, such as the intercommunity violence unleashed in the eastern part of the country in recent weeks, which would have resulted in dozens of victims. For this reason, she has asked the central government to adopt “all necessary measures” to protect the civilian population.
