Pompeo says that the USA does not seek regime change in Iran by military means

Washington, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that his country does not seek a military regime change in Iran, the American media reported Monday.

Pompeo made the remarks in a closed-door meeting on Monday with members of the US-Iranian community at the Renaissance Dallas hotel (Texas, USA), according to Axios, who cites three sources who were at that meeting.

At that meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs gave a brief opening speech and immediately gave way to a question and answer session.

One of the attendees asked what would be the option if there is no change in the political system in the Islamic Republic, to which Pompeo responded: “We are careful not to use the language of regime change” and added that the Administration of the President Donald Trump “is not going to do a military exercise inside Iran.”

Faced with another question about whether the US has considered the idea of a coup in that country, Pompeo was evasive.
“Even if there was (considered), would I be telling you?” Joked the Secretary of State.

“Our established mission,” he added, “is to give them the opportunity, the ability to create opportunities, create that, provide support for the transition.”

“Our best interest is a non-revolutionary group of leaders who lead Iran,” said Pompeo, according to the three Axios sources, one of which took notes during the meeting.

He also acknowledged that there are no guarantees that the new sanctions imposed by his government on Iran will not harm the people of this country and distanced his administration from the group Mujahideen al Halq, opposed to Tehran and designated by Washington as a terrorist organization.

In May 2018, Washington decided to abandon the nuclear treaty signed with Iran in 2015, claiming that Tehran was taking advantage of the agreement to develop a nuclear weapons program, something that was rejected by the other signatory countries: Russia, China, France, United Kingdom and Germany.

Since then, the USA It has again imposed all sanctions on Iran and has included the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, among others, on its list of terrorist organizations. (EFE)
