New York, .- The ambassador of the Dominican Republic in Washington, José Tomás Pérez, presented his book “The people behind the wall” in New York on Thursday, to the diaspora of his country, a work that sometimes turns into satire politics in which any resemblance to reality is “coincidence”.
At the headquarters of the Dominican Commissioner of Culture, with the presence of authorities such as the Minister of Women of the country, Janet Camilo, Pérez said that his first novel was born as a story “but when his main characters died I realized that the work it should not end there, that behind its short history there was a world that had to count, describe in its details “.
“It was at that moment when my first novel was born,” he said, a work with a collective protagonist, the town of Verón, in the Dominican Republic, which works as a reflection of the two faces of the country’s society: the poorest and the more prosperous.
The book, which tells the story of a people full of prejudices and bad omens, ignorant victim of the actions of politicians and opportunists who take advantage of their misfortune to take advantage; was defined as “garciamarquiano” by the permanent ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the UN, Francisco Portorreal, before an audience that filled the theater of the Commissioner.
Portorreal highlighted in the novel that it was like reading “a movie script” or “a series of Netflix”, which obsessed him until he forced him to stay up late and prevent him from thinking about other things.
The act was enlivened by the camera set of the Commissioner, who performed several pieces of music prior to the intervention of the first-time writer.
Perez also detailed the difficulties in the process of writing his work, whom he defined as “a spoiled son” who must be removed during blockades until the subconscious finds the solution to problems such as the loss of inspiration or when the characters go through paths not devised by the writer.
Its protagonists are simple people who live locked in their own world at the expense of what the destination dictates, with everyday scenes where humor prevails.
“The people behind the wall”, published by Caligrama, of the Penguin Random House publishing group, was presented by writer José Acosta, for whom the book represents “the idiosyncrasies of the Dominican Republic.”
Pérez, a native of the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, obtained a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), has a master’s degree in marketing at Webster University, Missouri (USA) and education at the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC).
He has taught at several universities in his country, including the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC) and Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM).
He also founded the Marketing School of the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC).
Pérez presented his novel at the Library of Congress on January 15, where he delivered a copy to the Hispanic Division, and now brings it to New York, the home of the largest Dominican population outside his country. (EFEUSA)
