Washington – At least twenty-three people were killed this Sunday, including several minors, and dozens were injured by the tornadoes that hit the state of Alabama, in the south of the country, said Sheriff Jay Jones of the county on Monday. Read.
“It looks like someone has taken a giant knife and cut the ground of rennet (…) I have not seen this level of destruction ever in my experience here in Lee County,” Jones told a news conference on Monday.
The official reported that the death toll had risen to 23, while warning that the figure could be even higher as rescue teams today inspect the area in search of survivors and victims.
The majority of the victims occurred in rural areas near the city of Opelika, which has 26,000 inhabitants and is close to the state of Georgia.
On its website, the East Alabama Medical Center revealed that it had received at least 60 people injured by the tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service, a dozen tornadoes touched down on Sunday afternoon in the states of Alabama and Georgia with winds between 215 and 265 kilometers per hour.
Sunday has been the deadliest tornado in the United States since May 20, 2013, when 24 people lost their lives for the “Moore”, which devastated the state of Oklahoma, according to the National Weather Service.
For his part, President Donald Trump announced that he had spoken “directly to the Federal Emergency Management Agency to give outstanding treatment to the Great State of Alabama and the wonderful people who have been devastated by the tornadoes.” (EFE)
