Los Angeles “Roma”, by Alfonso Cuarón, took the Oscar to the best foreign film today, becoming the first Mexican work that stands with the golden statuette in that category.
The rivals of “Rome” were “Capernaum” (Lebanon), “Cold War” (Poland), “The shadow of the past” (Germany) and “Shoplifters” (Japan).
Javier Bardem was in charge of delivering the Oscar, who made his speech completely in Spanish.
“There are no borders or walls that stop ingenuity and talent,” said the Spanish actor on the stage of the Dolby Theater. “In each region of the world there are stories that move us and in this edition we celebrate the excellence and importance of the culture and language of different countries,” he added.
Cuarón picked up the golden statuette and provoked laughter in the audience by explaining that he grew up watching foreign films such as “Citizen Kane”, “Jaws” or “The Godfather”.
In addition, he endorsed the famous words of the French filmmaker Claude Chabrol: “There are no waves, there is only the ocean”.
“The films nominated in this category show that we are all part of the same movement,” he said.
The previous Mexican works that achieved the nomination in this field but were left without victory were “Macario” (1960); “Ánimas Trujano” (1961); “Tlayucan” (1962); “Actas de Marusia” (1975); “Amores perros” (2000); “The crime of Father Amaro” (2002); “The Labyrinth of the Faun” (2006) and “Biutiful” (2010).
