Powerful 7.7 Earthquake Strikes Indonesia

At least 20 people are dead, thousands have been evacuated and rescue teams are searching for the missing after the powerful quake triggered landslides, structural damage and small tsunami waves across Flores

MAUMERE, Indonesia — August 15, 2026. Indonesia is confronting another major natural disaster after a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Flores region early Saturday, killing at least 20 people, forcing thousands from their homes and triggering small tsunami waves along portions of the coastline.

The earthquake struck at approximately 4:58 a.m. local time, when much of the population was asleep. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, known as BMKG, placed the epicenter offshore, approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Nagekeo in East Nusa Tenggara, at a relatively shallow depth of about 15 kilometers.

The shallow depth is significant. Large earthquakes occurring close to the surface can produce extremely strong shaking because seismic waves have less distance to travel before reaching populated areas.

Initial assessments indicate that the disaster affected homes, roads, public buildings and communications across several communities on Flores.

Reuters reported at least 20 deaths, while six people were injured and two remained missing in the latest available assessments. Approximately 2,000 people were evacuated in areas near the epicenter.

The casualty figures remain preliminary.

Rescue crews are still trying to reach some isolated communities, meaning the full scale of the disaster may not be known for hours or even days.

Maumere emerges as one of the hardest-hit areas

Much of the confirmed loss of life has been reported around Maumere, the largest city in Sikka Regency.

Several victims reportedly died when buildings collapsed during the early-morning shaking.

Rescue teams have been searching damaged structures for people who may remain trapped, while authorities continue assessing homes that are still standing but may no longer be structurally safe.

This distinction is critical after a major earthquake.

A building does not have to collapse immediately to become dangerous.

Columns, walls and structural connections can sustain internal damage that makes a structure vulnerable to collapse during an aftershock.

For that reason, residents in damaged areas have been urged to remain cautious about returning to affected buildings.

Hospitals move patients outdoors

The earthquake also disrupted medical facilities.

Associated Press reported that patients at some hospitals were moved outside as officials assessed whether the buildings remained safe enough for continued use.

Hospitals are among the most critical pieces of infrastructure following an earthquake.

They must simultaneously handle an influx of injured people while ensuring their own buildings, electricity, water supplies and communications remain functional.

When hospitals themselves sustain damage, the emergency can quickly become much more difficult to manage.

Church damaged during Mass

The earthquake also struck while religious services were underway.

According to AP, part of the roof of a church at a seminary in Sikka collapsed during Mass, injuring a priest.

Damage has also been reported in Sikka, West Manggarai and East Manggarai.

Authorities are expected to spend the coming days conducting structural inspections throughout the affected region.

The earthquake triggered a tsunami warning

The location of the earthquake immediately raised another potentially catastrophic concern.

A tsunami.

Because the quake was powerful, shallow and offshore, BMKG issued a tsunami warning shortly after the earthquake.

Residents in vulnerable coastal communities moved toward higher ground.

The concern was justified.

Instruments subsequently recorded small tsunami waves at several locations, confirming that the earthquake had displaced enough water to produce measurable changes in sea level.

Official BMKG measurements included approximately:

  • 0.14 meters at Bakalang-Alor
  • 0.17 meters at Dompu
  • 0.25 meters in East Flores
  • 0.36 meters at Labuan Bajo
  • 0.38 meters at Kewapante-Sikka Port
  • As much as approximately 0.94 meters at Maurole-Ende

The waves fortunately remained far below the scale associated with Indonesia’s most catastrophic tsunami disasters.

Tsunami warning lifted

After monitoring sea-level observations and the evolution of the event, Indonesian authorities lifted the tsunami warning at approximately 7:30 a.m. local time.

Residents were nevertheless urged to remain cautious and follow official instructions as aftershocks continued.

That distinction is important.

The tsunami threat diminished.

The earthquake emergency did not.

Aftershocks create another danger

A major earthquake is rarely a single event.

After a magnitude 7.7 quake, a sequence of aftershocks is expected as the Earth’s crust adjusts to the enormous redistribution of stress caused by the original rupture.

Some aftershocks can be strong enough to cause additional damage.

That presents a particular danger to buildings already weakened by the main earthquake.

It also creates significant risks for rescuers working inside collapsed or partially collapsed structures.

For residents, every new tremor can bring renewed fear and uncertainty.

Many families therefore remain outdoors or in temporary evacuation areas rather than returning immediately to their homes.

Landslides block roads

Another major threat is developing away from the coastline.

Landslides.

Flores is mountainous, and strong seismic shaking can destabilize slopes, sending soil, rocks and debris onto roads and communities below.

Associated Press reported that landslides affected sections of the important Trans-Flores highway, complicating access to some communities.

That creates a serious logistical problem.

Blocked roads delay ambulances.

They delay rescue teams.

They slow delivery of food, drinking water, medicine and fuel.

And they can temporarily isolate entire communities.

The danger can also persist long after the initial earthquake.

A slope weakened by seismic shaking may collapse later because of an aftershock or heavy rainfall.

Power and communications disrupted

The earthquake also caused power outages and communications problems in portions of the affected region.

Reuters reported disruptions that complicated efforts to contact communities near the epicenter and assess the extent of the damage.

These failures can dramatically increase the difficulty of disaster response.

Without electricity, hospitals and emergency facilities must rely on generators.

Fuel becomes critical.

Water pumping systems may stop operating.

Cellular networks can become overloaded or fail.

And emergency officials may struggle to determine which communities need assistance most urgently.

Why Indonesia experiences so many earthquakes

Indonesia’s vulnerability is rooted in its geography.

The country sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most geologically active regions on Earth.

Several major tectonic plates interact around the Indonesian archipelago.

As these plates collide, slide past one another or one moves beneath another through a process known as subduction, enormous amounts of geological stress accumulate.

Eventually, that stress is released.

The result can be earthquakes.

Volcanic eruptions.

And, when significant displacement occurs beneath the ocean, tsunamis.

Indonesia’s thousands of islands are spread across this extraordinarily complex tectonic environment.

Earthquakes are therefore not exceptional events in Indonesia.

Large destructive earthquakes remain a permanent national risk.

The 15-kilometer depth matters

Saturday’s earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 15 kilometers, according to BMKG.

In geological terms, that is relatively shallow.

The depth helps explain the intense shaking experienced near the epicenter.

A deep earthquake can be felt across an enormous region but may produce less intense surface shaking immediately above the rupture.

A shallow earthquake concentrates more of its energy near the surface.

Combined with a magnitude of 7.7, that made Saturday’s event particularly dangerous.

Flores has experienced catastrophe before

For residents of Flores, the events of Saturday revive painful memories.

On December 12, 1992, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the same general region.

That earthquake generated a devastating tsunami.

More than 2,000 people were killed, thousands were injured and tens of thousands were left homeless.

Maumere was among the areas devastated.

That history helps explain why Saturday’s tsunami warning generated such an urgent response.

Many families in Flores understand exactly what can happen when a major offshore earthquake is followed by the sea suddenly withdrawing or surging inland.

That collective memory may also have helped residents respond more quickly.

Indonesia still remembers 2004

No modern Indonesian disaster, however, compares with the catastrophe of December 26, 2004.

A massive magnitude 9.1 earthquake off northern Sumatra generated a tsunami that swept across the Indian Ocean.

More than 200,000 people were killed across multiple countries, with Indonesia suffering the greatest loss of life.

Entire communities in Aceh were destroyed.

The disaster fundamentally changed tsunami monitoring and warning systems throughout the region.

Saturday’s events demonstrate why those systems remain essential.

A powerful earthquake occurred.

Scientists detected the potential danger.

A warning was issued.

Residents evacuated.

Tsunami waves were measured.

And once authorities determined that the threat had diminished, the warning was lifted.

The tsunami warning system did not prevent the earthquake.

But it may have helped prevent the earthquake from becoming an even greater catastrophe.

The next 24 hours will be critical

Indonesia’s immediate priority is now search and rescue.

Teams must locate the missing and determine whether additional people remain trapped beneath collapsed structures.

At the same time, engineers will begin evaluating buildings.

Road crews will work to reopen transportation routes.

Utility companies will attempt to restore power and communications.

Emergency agencies must provide shelter, drinking water and food to displaced families.

And scientists will continue monitoring aftershocks.

The greatest uncertainty involves communities that remain difficult to reach.

Until authorities can fully assess those areas, casualty figures must remain provisional.

The death toll could still change

At least 20 people were confirmed dead in the latest available reporting Saturday morning, with six injured and two missing.

Those numbers may rise as rescue operations continue.

Indonesia has experienced this sequence many times before.

First comes the violent shaking.

Then the aftershocks.

Then rescuers begin entering collapsed buildings and isolated communities.

Only afterward does the true scale of the disaster become clear.

There is, however, one important piece of good news.

Saturday’s magnitude 7.7 earthquake did generate a tsunami, but the measured waves remained below approximately one meter and the warning was eventually canceled.

Indonesia therefore appears to have avoided the second catastrophe that residents of Flores feared most.

The emergency is now concentrated on land:

damaged buildings,

unstable hillsides,

blocked roads,

disrupted infrastructure,

and families waiting for news about missing relatives.

The earthquake lasted only seconds. For thousands of families across Flores, the consequences could last for years.
