Former Tallahassee Mayor and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum has been arrested in Alabama following a traffic stop that led authorities to discover suspected illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia inside his vehicle, according to law enforcement officials.

Gillum, 46, was taken into custody by officers with the Daphne Police Department after they reportedly observed his vehicle being driven erratically along U.S. Highway 98. During the stop, officers said they noticed a glass pipe in plain view on the vehicle’s center console, prompting a more thorough search.

According to the arrest report, investigators recovered marijuana, a substance believed to be methamphetamine, and additional drug paraphernalia from the vehicle. Gillum was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Baldwin County Jail and later released pending further legal proceedings.

A Political Career Once Considered Promising

Gillum rose to national prominence in 2018 when he became the Democratic nominee for Governor of Florida. He narrowly lost one of the closest gubernatorial elections in the state’s modern history to Republican Ron DeSantis, falling short by approximately 34,000 votes.

His campaign energized young voters, minority communities, and progressive Democrats, making him one of the party’s most promising rising stars at the time. Following the election, Gillum remained active in public affairs through political commentary and as co-host of the Native Land Pod podcast.

A Series of Personal and Legal Setbacks

The Alabama arrest marks the latest chapter in several highly publicized personal and legal challenges that have followed Gillum since leaving elected office.

In 2020, he made national headlines after being found intoxicated in a Miami Beach hotel room where suspected methamphetamine was discovered. Although he was not charged in that incident, Gillum later entered a rehabilitation program and publicly acknowledged his struggles with alcohol abuse and depression.

He also faced a federal investigation involving alleged campaign finance misconduct. After a lengthy legal process, he was acquitted on one charge, while the remaining federal charges were ultimately dismissed following a mistrial.

Political Impact

Although Gillum is no longer an active candidate or elected official, his name continues to carry significant recognition in Florida politics because of his historic 2018 gubernatorial campaign and his years as mayor of Tallahassee.

Political observers say the latest arrest is likely to further diminish any realistic prospects of a future return to elected office while renewing public attention on his legal and personal history.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities in Alabama have not released additional information regarding the status of the case beyond the initial arrest report. Court proceedings are expected to determine how the charges will move forward in the coming weeks. Gillum and his legal representatives had not issued a detailed public statement regarding the new charges at the time of publication.
