British painter David Hockney, considered one of the most influential contemporary artists, passed away this Friday at the age of 88, according to his representative.
“Renowned British artist David Hockney, one of the most important figures in contemporary art of both the 20th and 21st centuries, passed away peacefully at his home on June 11, 2026, a month before his 89th birthday,” stated a release from his representative, Erica Bolton, as reported by the BBC.
Born in Bradford, northern England, in 1937, Hockney was distinguished by a career spanning six decades as a painter, set designer, printmaker, and photographer.
Over the years, he continually reinvented his art—even embracing new technologies to create graphic designs on the iPad—and is regarded as one of the most influential artists in the spread of Pop Art, both in the UK and globally.
Having trained at the Royal College of Art in London, he settled in the United States in the 1960s, making everyday scenes and homosexuality central themes of his work.
