Trump Jokes Again About Running for President of Venezuela

U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated this Monday that he could run as a presidential candidate in Venezuela, citing the strong popularity ratings he claims to hold in that country.

“They say that if I ran for president of Venezuela, I would be the candidate with the most votes in Venezuela’s history. So, when I’m finished with this [the war in Iran], I can go to Venezuela,” he suggested during a press conference at the White House.

Trump explained that he would learn Spanish. “It won’t take me long. I’m good at languages. I’ll go to Venezuela and run for president,” he noted.

The U.S. leader subsequently highlighted that “we are very happy” with the “president-elect”—referring to the acting president, Delcy Rodríguez—and recalled the consequences of the dismantling of the state following the invasion of Iraq.

“Remember [George W.] Bush in Iraq. He fired the generals, he fired the police… He fired everyone, and do you know what they got? A mess. And what happened? The Islamic State formed. Those generals and those soldiers banded together, and all together they formed the Islamic State. That is not going to happen to us,” he argued.

According to Trump, “Venezuela is doing great.” “We went in; we had great success. A military might never before seen,” he emphasized, referring to the incursion during which President Nicolás Maduro was captured and in which around a hundred people died.

The President had already made similar remarks a week ago, when he asserted that he is the person with “the most support in the polls” in the Latin American country. “And in other words, after the president, I think I could go to Venezuela and run against Delcy,” he noted in statements to the press while accompanied by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
