North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was re-elected on Monday as General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), the single party that has ruled North Korea since the 1940s.
“The Ninth Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea has decided to re-elect Kim Jong Un as General Secretary of the WPK (…) for the sake of the mandate and development and for the prosperity of our nation,” the official North Korean news agency, KCNA, reported.
The decision was made with the “firm” support of the party congress delegates, the people, and the military, according to the official North Korean statement.
The decision was reportedly made on Sunday, the fourth day of the Congress, which spans several days of meetings and culminates in the publication of political objectives for the next five years in areas such as the economy, defense, and diplomacy.
