Trump on the Díaz-Canel Government: “Cuba is hanging by a thread, it’s in serious trouble”

US President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that the Cuban government of Miguel Díaz-Canel is “hanging by a thread” and “is in serious trouble,” after launching an attack last week against Venezuela—a close ally of Cuba—which resulted in around one hundred deaths and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

“I think Cuba is hanging by a thread. Cuba is in serious trouble… Cuba has been in trouble for the last 45 years, and it hasn’t collapsed yet. But I think they’re pretty close to it of their own accord,” he said in an interview with Hugh Hewitt, who asked him about the possibility of Díaz-Canel’s downfall.

Regarding whether it’s time to exert more pressure on Havana, the US president responded that he doesn’t think he can do much more than “go in and destroy the place.” He also suggested that the island depends on Venezuelan resources, which, since Maduro’s capture, he wants to be redirected to American companies.

His statements come days after the Trump administration launched an attack against Venezuela, in which approximately one hundred people died and which resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, First Lady Cilia Flores. Since then, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has been sworn in as acting president.
