Russia condemns “US aggression” against Venezuela under “untenable” pretexts

Moscow declares its support for the Venezuelan government and joins calls for an urgent meeting of the Security Council

MADRID, January 3 (EUROPA PRESS) – The Russian government has condemned the airstrikes carried out this morning against Venezuela as an act of “armed aggression” under “untenable pretexts,” without yet directly addressing the “capture” of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, First Lady Cilia Flores, which was announced by US President Donald Trump.

“This morning, the United States committed an act of armed aggression against Venezuela. This is deeply disturbing and reprehensible. The pretexts used to justify such actions are untenable,” the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

“Ideological hostility has triumphed over business pragmatism and the will to build relations of trust and predictability,” it added.

“In the current situation, it is crucial, above all, to avoid further escalation and focus on finding a way out through dialogue. We believe that all partners who may have grievances with each other should seek solutions through dialogue. We are ready to support them in this process,” added the Ministry headed by Sergei Lavrov.

“Latin America must remain the zone of peace that was declared in 2014. And Venezuela must be guaranteed the right to determine its own destiny without any destructive external intervention, much less military intervention,” the Ministry stated.

Finally, Russia reaffirms its “solidarity with the Venezuelan people” and its “support for the policies of its Bolivarian leadership, aimed at protecting national interests and the country’s sovereignty.”

Russia also declares its support for the statement by the Venezuelan authorities and the leaders of Latin American countries regarding the urgent convening of a meeting of the UN Security Council.

The Russian Embassy in Caracas is operating normally, given the current situation, and remains in constant contact with the Venezuelan authorities and Russian citizens residing in Venezuela, with no reports of injuries among the community.
