Democrats Retain Control of New Jersey After Mikie Sherrill’s Gubernatorial Victory

NEW YORK — The Democratic Party will retain political control of the state of New Jersey after Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill won the gubernatorial election, defeating Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli by more than twelve percentage points, according to official results with over 90% of the vote counted.

Sherrill, who currently represents the 11th district in the House of Representatives, garnered more than 1.6 million votes, surpassing Ciattarelli by approximately 380,000 votes. The victory ensures the continuity of Democratic leadership in the state, following the departure of Governor Phil Murphy, who is completing his second term, the maximum allowed by state law.

A Victory Message and a Conciliatory Tone

In a message posted on the social media platform X, the now governor-elect expressed her gratitude to the voters:

“It is the greatest honor of my life to earn your trust and become the 57th governor of New Jersey. I promise to listen, lead with courage, and never forget whom I serve,” she stated.

The 53-year-old candidate, a former Navy officer, campaigned on a moderate platform focused on protecting public services, strengthening educational programs, reducing the cost of living, and improving access to healthcare—issues that have been central to the political debate in the state for the past decade.

A Campaign Marked by Opposition to Trump

A central element of her campaign message was direct criticism of former President Donald Trump and the influence of his agenda on Republican politics. Sherrill repeatedly linked Ciattarelli to the former president, suggesting that his potential rise to power would represent a setback for social and civil rights policies.

The strategy aimed to energize the Democratic and moderate electorate in a state where Trump maintains minority but mobilized support. According to analysts, this campaign approach proved decisive, especially in high-turnout suburban areas, traditionally key for both parties.

Reactions and Future Outlook

For his part, Ciattarelli conceded defeat without delay and thanked his supporters for their support. The state Republican Party stated that it will continue working to regain political ground, especially among voters concerned about taxes and security.

Sherrill’s victory solidifies New Jersey as a Democratic stronghold at a time when the party is seeking to reinforce its image of stability and efficient public policy management in the face of a polarized national landscape.

Her taking office opens a new political chapter in one of the most densely populated and economically important states in the country, with a governor committed to promoting a pragmatic, open, and results-oriented approach.
