US President Donald Trump announced a “full and immediate” ceasefire between India and Pakistan this Saturday, following the exchange of attacks in recent hours and fearing that tensions could escalate into a full-scale conflict between the two countries.
“After a long night of US-mediated talks, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire,” he said on his TruthSocial account, although New Delhi and Islamabad have not yet officially commented on the matter.
“Congratulations to both countries for using common sense and great intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” the US president said, hours after Pakistan attacked several Indian military bases in what he described as a response to India’s attacks in recent days.
Tensions between Pakistan and India have escalated following an April attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists. New Delhi subsequently blamed Islamabad and launched attacks against the neighboring country, although Pakistani authorities have distanced themselves from the incident.
