The Vice President of the United States and Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, has called recent comments by former president and now Republican candidate, Donald Trump, on the protection of women “very offensive” at a rally ahead of next Tuesday’s presidential elections.
“I think it is very offensive to women in terms of not understanding their needs, their power, their rights and their ability to make decisions about their own lives, including their own body,” she said in statements to the press.
This comes after the tycoon assured the day before at a rally in the city of Green Bay, in the state of Wisconsin, that he would protect American women, “whether they like it or not.” “I’m going to protect them from migrants coming in. I’m going to protect them from foreign countries with missiles and from many other things,” he said.
The former president made these statements dressed in a reflective safety vest and driving a garbage truck, alluding to the recent words of President Joe Biden, who said that “the only garbage he sees floating is his supporters.”
Harris tried to distance herself from this comment shortly after, clarifying that she “strongly disagrees” with any criticism that alludes to the vote. “I will be the president of all Americans, whether they vote for me or not,” she said in statements to the media.
Biden’s words referred to a previous controversy sparked by a joke made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a rally of former President Trump in which he called Puerto Rico an “island of garbage.” The New York magnate, in fact, later retracted the incident.
