Blinken assures Machado and González that the US will defend the “return” to democracy in Venezuela

The Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, has assured this Tuesday in a call with the Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and the presidential candidate Edmundo González that Washington will continue to defend the “return” to democracy in the Latin American country.

Blinken has praised the “courage and commitment” of both Machado and González to the “democratic principles in the face of brutal repression and adversity” in the country, led by President Nicolás Maduro, according to a statement from the State Department.

He also stated that the Biden Administration “will strive to ensure that the will of Venezuelan voters is respected,” enshrined in the elections of July 28, and to “hold Maduro, as well as the representatives of his Executive, accountable for their actions against democracy.

Venezuela held presidential elections on July 28 in which the ruling party gave victory to President Nicolás Maduro with just over 51 percent of the votes. However, the opposition has denounced that the elections were rigged and claims its victory.
