At the 20th edition of the Premios Juventud, held on Thursday, July 20, the energy was overflowing from the start with an impressive medley of reggaeton presented by the iconic Puerto Rican artist Daddy Yankee. Reggaeton, according to him, was the soundtrack of an entire generation. The emotional musical memory included outstanding performances by Zion & Lennox, Wisin, Chencho Corleone, Angel & Khriz, among others.
Next, the stage vibrated with the representation of Mexican music by Fuerza Regida, a Mexican-American group that performed their latest hit “Sabor Fresa”, accompanied by powerful tubas and the powerful voice of their leader, JOP. These two performances set the mood for the night, showcasing the balance between the two genres that dominate Latin music today.
The ceremony began with the announcement of the first winners of the night. Ha*Ash, the Mexican pop duo, won the Best Pop Album award for their production “Haashtag.” Shakira was then awarded Best Pop/Urban Song for her outstanding collaboration with Bizarrap. Throughout the night, the Colombian star would reach the most awards, with a total of eight awards, including her recognition for her powerful song “TQG” with Karol G and the Premios Juventud Female Artist award.
Moved, Shakira expressed her gratitude to her fans during her speech: “The best luck I’ve had is with my fans. They inspire me to be better and never give up. When I have doubts, they make me believe in myself again. They give me strength when I feel fragile. They have been loyal, they have protected me. They celebrate my joy and are with me in the fights. It is because of you that I want to be a better musician and a better person.”
Later in the evening, Shakira also received the Change Agent Award, in recognition of her positive influence on society. Another winner of this award was Camila Cabello, who spoke passionately about the importance of taking action towards environmental justice and the fight against climate change.
The performances were one of the highlights of the night. A new salsa version of Hoobastank’s “The Reason,” which celebrates its 20th anniversary just like the Premios Juventud, was masterfully performed by Jonathan Moly and his rock band.
Also, the Mexican pop trio Camila made an exciting return to the stage together after a decade. Mario Domm, Samo and Pablo Hurtado delighted the audience with their new single “Fugitivos”, and a medley of their hit songs “Mientes” and “Todo Cambió”.
This year, the Premios Juventud presented 15 new categories that reflected the latest trends in Latin music, and in that sense, Karol G and Peso Pluma stood out alongside Shakira, winning a total of five awards each.
The 20th edition of the Premios Juventud was undoubtedly a memorable spectacle, filled with exciting music, well-deserved recognition and special moments that will remain in the memory of Latin music fans.
