The White House has denied this Wednesday the accusations that the United States is behind the explosions registered in the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines in September 2022, reiterating that “it was not involved in the explosion.”
The Department of Defense has assured that the US Navy is not involved in the Nord Stream pipeline incident, hours after Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh pointed to US divers as responsible for placing explosives in the pipelines. ducts, as reported by ‘The New York Post’.
“The United States was not involved in the Nord Stream explosion,” Pentagon spokesman Garron Garn said in a brief statement to the aforementioned newspaper, reiterating the Defense Department’s response to the same accusation in October.
Previously, Hersh explained on his website that those responsible for the alleged sabotage are US Navy divers, who would have planted explosives during NATO’s ‘Baltops 22’ exercises.
According to the journalist, on September 26, a Norwegian Navy plane dropped a hydroacoustic buoy that detonated the explosive devices. Thus, he has explained that the decision to blow them up was made nine months after a “secret debate” by US national security agencies.
On that day, Nord Stream 2 AG, operator of the Russian gas pipeline of the same name, announced a gas leak due to unknown causes in one of the two infrastructure pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm.
Subsequently, the authorities reported that two branches of the parallel Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline had also suffered damage. Germany, Denmark and Sweden did not rule out an act of sabotage just eight months after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service classified the explosions as terrorist attacks and on September 30 revealed that it had evidence pointing to the involvement of Western countries.
