The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, met this Thursday with the newly appointed President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, to whom she recognized that her promotion to the Presidency represents a “positive change” for the country. Central American.
Both have discussed “a wide range of issues”, including “fundamental” aspects such as immigration, the fight against corruption and the economic situation, as detailed by the White House in a statement.
They have also addressed cooperation between the United States and Honduras in health matters, including the donation of 3.9 million vaccines by Washington through the COVAX mechanism. At this point, Harris has informed the president that “in the coming months” “several hundred thousand doses” will arrive in the country.
At this point, Castro has conveyed his intention to reopen educational centers with the greatest possible health guarantees, to which Harris has responded by sharing the commitment of the US Government to provide “more than 500,000 pediatric syringes”, as well as the donation of 1, 35 million dollars –more than 1.2 million euros– for “to renovate educational and health facilities.”
On migration and corruption matters, the US representative thanked the approach shown by Castro, including her intention to request the assistance of the United Nations to “establish an international commission.”
On the other hand, Harris has promised to promote, through a business delegation led by the Department of Commerce, to “generate business opportunities in Honduras.”
Finally, both have agreed on the need to put an end to gender-based violence in Honduras, an aspect that Washington considers “a central pillar” in the White House’s strategy to address the main causes of migration in Central America.
