The Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States, Alejandro Mayorkas, has tested positive for coronavirus, despite having been vaccinated, as confirmed Tuesday by the department’s spokesperson, Marsha Espinosa.
“Secretary Mayorkas has tested positive for coronavirus after undergoing a test as part of the routine protocols prior to the trip”, which he planned to carry out together with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, to Colombia.
Espinosa has said that Mayorkas has “only mild congestion” and “will isolate himself and work from home” following the protocols of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States. “Contact tracing is underway,” the spokeswoman added in a statement.
Mayorkas planned to travel to Colombia with Blinken, where the US authorities planned to meet with the heads of Brazilian, Colombian and Chilean diplomacy, to address the recent migration crisis.
