Putin calls US intervention in Afghanistan a “tragedy”

The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has described this Wednesday as a “tragedy” the military presence of the United States in Afghanistan a day after the withdrawal of troops from the North American country ended.

In a public act, the president stated that the result of the US intervention in the country has meant a great “loss” for the Americans themselves, as well as for the Afghan people, as reported by the Sputnik news agency.

Thus, he has been critical of Washington’s decisions: “The result has been null, not to say negative.” For him, the American troops “have tried to impose their norms and standards” for twenty years “without reaping any success”, especially in the “political sphere”.

According to UN data, between 2010 and 2019 the number of civilian victims has exceeded 100,000 (including deaths and injuries). The US invasion of the country, which has had the support of NATO, took place in 2001 and was part of the fight against terrorism that followed the attacks of September 11 of that same year.
