Fauci regrets that the US has responded “worse” to the COVID-19 pandemic “than most other countries”

The main person in charge of the fight against the coronavirus in the United States, Anthony Fauci, lamented this Monday that the North American nation “has done worse than most other countries” in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Emphasizing that the situation should not have been so “bad”, Fauci has stressed in an interview with Good Morning America that the United States’ response has been “worse” than that of other nations, despite the fact that it is a country. “rich highly developed”.

“There were things (…) that if you go back and think about what you could have done, the kinds of disparate responses from different states, instead of having a unified approach,” he said, alluding to the lack of a strategy of fight against the unified pandemic in the United States. The different states have competence to dictate their own restrictions and regulations, which has led to a very uneven response between territories of the country.

“It was bad; it is bad now,” he added, as the United States approaches the 500,000 mark from COVID-19. In this sense, he lamented that when the authorities anticipated some 240,000 deaths from COVID-19 “the public thought that we were being hyperbolic and now we are here with half a million deaths”, an “impressive” figure.

For this reason, the epidemiologist has encouraged to “go ahead” and “commit as a unified country” to face the pandemic “together”. “This is a common enemy,” he insisted, stressing that vaccines and public health measures can slow the spread of the disease. “These are the weapons we have against this horrible disease”, he has riveted.

The United States is the country hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic in the world, both in infections and in the number of deaths. So far, US health authorities have counted more than 28.1 million cases, including about 499,000 fatalities from the disease.
