The vice president-elect of the United States, Kamala Harris, and her husband, Doug Emhoff, received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday.
“I want to ask everyone to get vaccinated,” said Harris, 56, after receiving the injection. “It is literally about saving lives. I believe in science and it is the scientists who have created and approved this vaccine,” she said.
The vaccine, from the Moderna company, has been administered at the United Medical Center hospital in Washington. It requires two doses to be effective.
Other figures in American politics, such as President-elect Joe Biden and current Vice President Mike Pence, have been vaccinated with doses of Pfizer / Biontech, the first vaccine to reach the United States.
Biden and Harris are scheduled to be sworn in on January 20 after their victory in the November 3 presidential election.
